Sunnyside Downs

…a special equine-centered program offering supportive care, acceptance, understanding, and recreation for those with Down syndrome.

Every cell in the human body has a nucleus.  A nucleus is where genetic material is stored in genes. Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes. Typically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.

This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.  Common physical traits of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm.  Although each individual with Down syndrome is unique, most experience delays in gross and fine motor skills, speech and cognitive ability.  They also commonly have strengths in empathy and social understanding in relating to others.  This is a delightful characteristic evident from birth through adult life.

Individuals with Down syndrome are becoming increasingly integrated into society and community organizations, such as schools, health care systems, work forces, and social and recreational activities.   We are proud to be a special place where people with Down syndrome can thrive.

At Sunnyside Farms, Inc. we offer innovative forms of behavioral health and holistic care.  Through wellness opportunities and experiential therapy at the farm, our time with the horses and other farm animals provides emotional strength, courage, peace and happiness.  When our minds are strong and healthy, we can battle even the toughest hurdles.  Sunnyside Farms empowers individuals with Down syndrome to be their unique selves, grow in resilience and courage and live their best lives.

There are many ways in which individuals with Down syndrome, their families and care-providers can benefit from equine-assisted therapy:

Physical Benefits – riding supports core strength and balance

Fine Motor Benefits – grooming and detailed work supports eye-hand coordination

Emotional Benefits – gentle presence and connection with the horses promotes calm and peaceful mental status and regulates  temperament

Sensory Benefits – touch, smell, movement and being outdoors help sensory stimulation

Speech – speech increases when we are connected and regulated

Social – interacting with horses provides courage, empowerment and strength

Time at Sunnyside can relieve physical and emotional strains.  It can revitalize the soul.  With the help of a Fjord Horse, every family member can do almost anything and we will be stronger together for it!

Mental strength, behavioral wellness and mindfulness are so important when conquering the challenges in life. Calm your mind or that of your child, develop conscious breathing, core strength, heighten your physical awareness, cognitive ability and realize that, “you’ve got this”, YOU can have all the pleasures in life!

We make wishes into wellness at Sunnyside. People diagnosed with Down syndrome have happy and healthy lives with supportive care and we’re here to help!  Just tell us your wish and watch your dreams come true with a visit to Sunnyside!
